'The Time We Danced' is a reflection on conflicting feelings around repurposing sites of a difficult and painful past. Currently a cultural centre in Vilnius, the building used to serve as a prison for more than a century for five political regimes and was closed in 2019.
Jazz music, which has its own complex history and association with resistance through joy in the 20th century is finding its way to a formerly oppressive institution and is transforming it into a place of freedom, while the interiors, which were left almost intact from their former days, are being a kind of memento that makes the sense of freedom more acute and ephemeral.
